Dear iCompost customers We've found that some customers are not keeping their iCompost clean using Clean mode which results in dirt building up on a temperature sensor. Remember, that altough it is a composter, it is also an electronic appliance that needs to be taken care of the way you would any other kitchen appliance. With the sensor thinking the air is cooler than it actually is, due to being covered with dirt, it keeps heating and heating. Some of these units heat too much and cause warping of the body. Please remember to use Clean mode to avoid this problem. Insrtuctions for keeping it clean can be found on the Users Guide (https://www.icompost.co.za/users-guide-icompost)tab. Below is a picture of how much dirt accumulated on this customer's temperature sensor.
Don't forget to use CLEAN mode! content media

Tech blogger, The Cape Town Guy, published an independent review of the iCompost. They made a nice video which you can see in the link below. Please note they received a version which was for reviewers only which came with a paper instruction manual. In the normal version, the instruction manual is only digital. They also had the old filter, which has now been superseded. Enjoy https://capetownguy.co.za/turn-waste-into-soil-with-the-icompost-kitchen-composter/

Dear customers, please note that all iCompost orders sent out from 14 Jan will contain a new filter which is washable rather than refillable. It is manufactured using conventional methods and we have discontinued the 3D printed versions.

Your new iCompost has a plastic film on the control panel to prevent scratches during transport. It's not easy to see, so here's a video of how to remove it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVfTbU4D8bc&t=16s

Dear iCompost Batch 2 customer We have good news! The shipment arrived in Durban on Wednesday as predicted in the last update. It was processed and cleared without delay as we had all documents in place and payments done. However, we were notified by Transnet that their staff would be going on strike the next day, which they did. The container can't be moved onto a truck until they are back online, but when they do, we should receive the cargo in JHB the next day, and deliveries will start the day after that. This may add a few days to the planned delivery date, so our revised expected date is a conservative 31 Oct. But we hope the strike will end soon and all parties will come out happy, including our iCompost customers. At least the cargo is only at the other end of the N3, not the other end of the ocean!

Notice: Dear iCompost customers, we have detected 2 iCompost machines which have been damaged by power surges that occur when the power comes back after loadshedding. Cause: There is a very sensitive magnetic sensor in the lid that could be damaged by surges which it was not designed for. Symptom: When the power is plugged in, 3 beeps are heard, but no lights flash/turn on. This is the same regardless if the lid is closed or open. Recommendation: Unplug the iCompost when loadshedding starts. Only plug it back in after a few minutes when the power comes back. Warranty: You are hereby given notice that this problem, as described in 'Symptom', will not be covered by the warranty as the damage is caused by external factors. Repairs are possible, but they will incur a courier and part cost, but will be non-profit.

Dear iCompost Batch 2 customer We're pleased to let you know that the ship has sailed! It departed Shenzhen on Saturday at 9pm and will stop in Singapore before coming to Durban. You can track its live location here. Its ETA in Durban is 05 October. The lockdown in Shenzhen did indeed cause a 2-week delay, but we are glad that we are out because the in the previous shipment the lockdown caused a 2 month delay! When it arrives, it will go through customs, then be trucked to us in JHB, and then we will pack your order before couriering it to you. This means we're behind schedule by 2 weeks, so you can expect your iCompost by 15 October. We apologise for the delay, but at least it's almost here! Below is a user guide video to prepare you for when it arrives. Hang tight, we're almost there! Check our Forum for any missed updates

Dear iCompost Batch 2 customer This is our first official update for the group of Batch 2! We're pleased to let you know that it is a good one too. The factory completed production on time on 01 Sep and below is a short video of us inspecting the order. The next step will be to load it onto the ship and send it to Durban which typically takes 25 days, so we expect it at the end of September. We're just concerned that Shenzhen had a lockdown over the weekend due to a COVID19 wave and it's not clear how ocean freight will be affected yet because they are only announcing easing of restrictions today. We're trying to rush our container out before a back log builds up like it did when China shut down Shanghai earlier this year. We'll provide the next update on 16 Sep to let you know how it went and what date you can expect your iCompost. All updates will be posted on our Forum so you can see them all in one place, and if you have any questions you can Whatsapp us. Thanks again for helping to get this much needed innovation going in SA!

FYI these are the expected running costs of iCompost Electricity costs about R1/cycle if on Eskom (uses 0.7kWh) Filter refills cost R100 and may need replacing every 4 months if you are running it 3 times per week. Compost Activator is R60/595g which lasts 35 cycles. (works out to R1.71/cycle) Some people may produce more or less waste so it depends on your household's habits, but generally it doesn't cost much to run and is still less costly to the environment than throwing food waste in the bin.

Dear customers, we have become aware of a fault affecting some Air Filter cartridges. Problem The lid of the cartridge is warping and losing its seal with the cartridge body. Filter material is falling out through the gap, and air from the machine is not fully flowing through the filter, causing the machine to smell. Cause We 3D printed 2 batches of the Filters which used 2 different materials. One material, PLA+, seems to have not held up against this year's winter because some of our air filters in storage have warped without being used in a machine. The other materials, ABS, seems to be holding up just fine, but we are running some more tests to make sure. Solution Once we confirm that ABS does not have any issues, we will manufacture a batch, and then invite you by email to request a free replacement if you need one Apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you for your understanding

If you don't use Facebook, you can get support on our Forum here. Please take note of 3 important changes: In order to expedite the deliveries, we had to use stickers for the branding instead of laser engraving which we wanted to do. Please be careful not to rub the sticker because it may damage easily. With the Compost Activator, 50% of the cost was going to the packaging of the Activator pouch which doesn't benefit the compost process, therefore, we have changed the Compost Activator method to a 'tablespoon system', where you get the loose mixture and you add 4 Tbsps of it per cycle. We then added 5 more days' worth of activator so it lasts 35 days instead of 30 (if using everyday). We believe, in general, we should be paying for product not packaging. As mentioned before, we changed the Air Filter to be refillable instead of replaceable and reduced the price of an Air Filter Refill from R150 to R100 Thanks again for making this possible and showing extraordinary patience. We had no order cancellations due to the wait which shows your understanding of the delays. If we ran the whole logistics system, we would've stuck to every date as promised because that's the kind of world we expect to live in in this century. We'll continue to provide the same level of service through your compost journey. Keep in touch!

Dear valued composter customers, please note that for Batch 1, delivery was free but courier costs have gone up drastically since then, therefore we have to add a delivery fee for Batch 2 and 3. The delivery fee will be calculated on checkout based on your order. The fee goes towards the packaging of your order, as well as the courier charge and we make no profit on delivery fees.

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer The wait is nearly over! Our ship is off the coast of KZN and expected to dock in Durban today at 6pm. Our iComposts will then go through customs (we already have the necessary permits to sell an electronic appliance), and then be trucked to us in JHB. We will then pack your order and courier it to you. Orders which have a Priority Pass will be couriered first. At this stage, we would like to ask you to please let us know if there has been any changes to your address, email or phone number since placing your pre-order to avoid problems with delivery. Even if you have told us about a change before, please let us know again to confirm. If you can't remember what details you used, you can search your email for "Pre-Order Special" to see the order details. We will send one more update before the deliveries commence so keep a keen ear for news.

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer We have great news - the ship has sailed! Your iCompost is on the ship Bear Mountain Bridge which is headed for Durban after stopping in Singapore. The shipping gods were not kind to us because we were originally supposed to be on the Kota Lekas on 2 May but the ship was overbooked due to the logistics crises outside China, and we were bumped off. The backup, Bear Mountain Bridge, was then supposed to reach Shenzhen on 10 May but was delayed and only arrived on 18 May. It finally left Shenzhen yesterday with our container and is expected to arrive in Durban on 05 June. This means we're 2 weeks behind schedule, but we're in the final stretch. We know it's a bit ridiculous that you've had to wait so long since placing your order in Dec/Jan so we'll be giving you a free Activator set voucher for every month that we were late to try say sorry. We try to give a high level of service so we're not happy about the delays, but it will be worth the wait to be the first in South Africa to compost with this method. It has also impacted us negatively because we can't place the Batch 2 order until the 1st shipment is distributed, which means we lost the ability to fit in one more shipment in the year. Please find attached the Bill of Lading which shows that the load is on the Bear Mountain Bridge as we like to be as transparent as possible when you've trusted us with so much of your money.

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer This may just look like a blurry photo of empty boxes, but it is actually your iComposts arriving at the Port of Shenzhen! We are super excited to let you know that the factory has completed the batch and it is now in the hands of the shipping gods. We are still proceeding with shipping to Durban, even though there was a week-long backlog created when the port halted operations for the flooding disaster, since Transnet advised that it would be cleared by the time our shipment arrives. If you were affected by the disaster in KZN and prefer to cancel your order and get a refund, we will waive the 5% admin fee to try help as much as possible. Just send us an email. You can find the latest project management dashboard above showing that you can expect to receive your iCompost before the end of May. Don't forget, we have set up a dedicated email to handle any inquiries related to the machine or if you just want to chat. It is info@icompost.co.za We can almost smell the compost! Hang tight

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer We are glad to let you know that the estimated delivery date is still on track for the end of May. We did have a little scare because all factories in Shenzhen had to hard lockdown for one week for COVID19 (even Apple shut down its factory), so we missed the email update on 25 March because we were trying to strategise how to overcome the delay. Although there is a delay with the factory who produces the inner pot (because they actually got covid), we got a time saving in the sea freight... We changed shipping companies to a more expensive one (MSC) which has a regular and reliable sailing from Shenzhen to Durban to ensure we minimize delay because it is important to impress our first batch pre-order customers. The war and fuel crisis seems to not be affecting this sailing and we hope that continues. We've also obtained SANS 60335-1 certification for the iCompost which stands testimony that the electronics in the machine are safe. The lab test costed R40,000 because it is extremely thorough! Don't forget, we have set up a dedicated email to handle any inquiries related to the machine or if you just want to chat. It is info@icompost.co.za Otherwise, hang tight, we're almost there!

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer This is just a routine update to let you know we are not aware of any further delays as yet. We are looking forward to the 25th March which is when the factory will assemble the machines, and we have arranged the logistics to get it onto the ship as soon as possible. Despite the rising fuel prices due to the war, the most important thing to us is making sure you get your iCompost as soon as possible so we will absorb any fluctuations in shipping costs. We just ask if you could please share on social media about your iCompost experience when you receive it so we can boost sales of Batch 2. We have also started 3D printing the air filters in JHB with a design that makes them refillable instead of replaceable. You will be able to compost the spent filter material in the machine to further prevent waste. This new design will bring the cost of the filters down from R150 to below R100. Lastly, we have set up a dedicated email to handle any inquiries related to the machine or if you just want to chat. It is info@icompost.co.za Otherwise, hang tight, you're going to love it!

Dear iCompost Batch 1 Customer In our last update we promised that we would send a Project Management timeline for you to get a clearer estimate of what date you can expect your order. Please find it attached using the button below. We'll provide another update on 11 March but it is likely that there won't be much to update because the critical date from which we'll be able to make expediting decisions would be 25 March when the materials arrive at the factory. Nevertheless, you don't have to worry about anything, we are on it!

We're excited to announce that we will be opening another iCompost Pre-Order batch sooner than expected! We realized that, even though the 1st pre-order period closed on 10 Jan, we've been receiving hundreds of requests to get an order in but had to put them on the waiting list until we figured out some financing of the 2nd batch. We've now figured out a project management model in order to deliver a rolling model of batches, and those on the waiting list will be invited to order first. Customers of Batch 2 can expect their iCompost in September 2022! You can place your order on our website now and get excited to get the coolest appliance ever! We'll also have a Batch 3 which will be delivered in December 2022 in time for Christmas
